Moria was traveling, encountering similarly transient young people who have no qualms about treating strangers, especially American strangers, with disrespect. In my case most of the people I meet are workers and are more long term, so they're probably more likely to be civil, but they still have a vested interest in forcing me to decry the evils of my nation. My mother-in-law and one of my brothers-in-law does the same, but of course with different motives and tones. It's frankly just easier to travel as something people admire (a New Yorker) than something everyone despises (an American).

I do often get the feeling that a lot of British humor would best be approximated by Martha Stewart hanging out with Buster Rhymes. Look, she's a blue-blood, but she just said 'hizzy'! Not all, but some.

I think he was comparing the British expats to the Asians who come to America as computer programmers and doctors in that last bit.Joe Mondellohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10761076947867776348noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-35831845.post-22757483370188656462007-03-29T10:08:00.000+09:002007-03-29T10:08:00.000+09:00[note I no longer say "America" since people no lo...[note I no longer say "America" since people no longer like America and I am tired of deflecting questions about George Bush and Iraq]

Holy crap, I heard this from Moria (I think you remember her) after she took a trip around the world. She said many of the Europeans she met laid right into America. Who does this when they first meet a person? I'd love to crap on American foreign policy but the arrogance of someone doing it would turn me away from talking to them.

I too can't imagine that northeastern city dwellers are low on irony. Sometimes I think we overdue it.

They're all playing extras in their own me-in-New-York movie.

That's a great line. Not to dump on the Brits unnecessarily, but do you ever get the impression that the only reason British humor is funny is because of the accents? We associate it with "high class", so a poop joke seems so much better.

they are our remittance men, paid to leave. Not like the other immigrants, who made it here as the cleverest, most adventurous in the village. What you get are our failures and fantasists.

Somehow I don't believe Europeans think that any of the "other immigrants" are clever. It's complete speculation, but I think there's always been the thought that these immigrants were the refuse of Europe.Jeffhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18122192881701523002noreply@blogger.com
