Twitter and supply and demand
I haven't investigated Twitter too deeply, but on first glance it seems to be evidence that there is a huge gap between the desire to be listened to and the desire to listen. So what you see is people putting up with others' comments in order for a chance to have other people put up with their own. Twitter is where the blogosphere's supply side outstrips its demand side, and I predict a precipitous fall for it.

I look at Twitter and I wonder if I'm missing something. I think you're right, it's just too much content. Yet I think with all the hype it could still be successful.
For a time, but I dare say that blogs will always exist on the net, while microblogs like Twitter will be a flash in the plan.
